The slick touch of bristle  
and soft cloth on smooth  
leather is not like a prayer  
or like anything  
          of the spirit.  
  
A tactile glide beneath  
the hand is simply a thing  
                    to attend  
as the mind settles.  
  
Layers of the day strip  
off and cling silent  
to the rag and brush  
            quiet dust  
      to forget   
as the kit goes   
back into the box.
